The NCE’s eight CACREP curriculum areas are study categories, not its six scored work-behavior domains. Its current scored blueprint includes Professional Practice and Ethics; Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis; Areas of Clinical Focus; Treatment Planning; Counseling Skills and Interventions; and Core Counseling Attributes. On the NCMHCE, Areas of Clinical Focus is represented through case diagnoses and scenarios, not separately weighted scored items.

These formats apply before July 1, 2027. NBCC has announced new specifications effective that date; check the outline for your test date. Pass rate is not a passing score

A pass rate describes a defined group of candidates; a passing score is the form-specific minimum set by NBCC. Neither is a prediction of your individual result. Use the current handbook and your official score report, not unsourced percentages.

Why candidates fail the NCE

Reading instead of answering. Passive review does not build the retrieval speed the exam measures.
Skipping research and assessment. Statistics, reliability, and validity items are predictable free points that candidates avoid studying.
Pacing. 200 items in 3 hours 45 minutes is about 67 seconds each; running out of time costs more points than any content gap.
Answering from practice, not the textbook. The NCE rewards the ethically ideal answer, not what your agency does.

What is the NCE pass rate?

What score do you need to pass the NCE?

NBCC sets a form-specific passing score through standard setting and equating. There are 160 scored items. The handbook does not establish a universal passing percentage or a fixed low-to-mid-90s cutoff.

Why do people fail the NCE?

Review missed content areas and pacing. The current NCE has 200 questions in 225 minutes, averaging 67.5 seconds per question; these are preparation priorities, not verified causes of failure.

How soon can you retake the NCE?

The current state-licensure handbook specifies a 30-day wait before a retake unless your board requires longer; a new registration and fee are required. Use the wait to work practice questions in your two weakest CACREP areas rather than re-reading the whole review book.

Is the NCE pass rate higher than the NCMHCE?
