NCE exam dates and scheduling

Last updated September 29, 2026 · Published by Counseling Exam Assist

Short answer

There are no fixed national NCE dates. The NCE is offered year-round by computer at Pearson VUE centers (and remotely where available). Once NBCC approves your application, you pick an open appointment within your authorization window.

Step-by-step: from application to test day

  1. Apply through NBCC (for the NCC) or through your state board for licensure.
  2. Receive your exam authorization and eligibility deadline by email.
  3. Schedule with Pearson VUE — book 6–8 weeks ahead in busy months.
  4. Sit the exam: 200 questions in 3 hours 45 minutes.
  5. Get an unofficial result on site; official scores follow from NBCC.

Frequently asked questions

When is the NCE offered?

The NCE is offered year-round by computer at Pearson VUE test centers and, where available, by remote proctoring. There are no fixed national test dates; once NBCC approves you, you schedule an available appointment within your eligibility window.

How long is NCE eligibility valid?

After NBCC or your state board approves your application, you receive an authorization with a limited window to schedule and sit the exam. Check your authorization email for the exact deadline, since it differs for state-board and NCC applicants.

Can I take the NCE while still in my master's program?

Yes, many CACREP-accredited programs participate in NBCC's graduate student testing, letting students take the NCE near the end of their program. Ask your program coordinator.

How soon do you get NCE results?

Candidates usually see an unofficial pass/fail result at the test center, with official scores released by NBCC in the following weeks.
