NCMHCE passing score

Last updated September 29, 2026 · Published by Counseling Exam Assist

Short answer

NBCC does not publish a fixed NCMHCE passing score. The cut score is set separately for each exam form, and you are compared to that standard — not graded on a curve. Practice percentages measure study performance; they are not official cutoffs or a guarantee of passing.

How the NCMHCE is scored

  • 11 clinical case simulations, each with a series of multiple-choice items.
  • One case study is unscored; 100 multiple-choice questions are scored, each worth one point.
  • Scored points are totaled and compared to the cut score for your specific form.
  • Your result is pass/fail with a domain-level breakdown on the score report.

Why the cut score changes between forms

Every exam form has slightly different difficulty. NBCC uses subject-matter experts to set a minimum competency standard per form, so a harder form needs fewer points and an easier form needs more. That's why online "you need X out of Y" numbers are unreliable.

Practice target to aim for

Frequently asked questions

What is the passing score for the NCMHCE?

NBCC does not publish one fixed passing score. The cut score is set for each exam form through a standard-setting process, so the number of points needed varies slightly between forms. You receive a pass/fail result plus a score report showing performance by domain.

What percentage do you need to pass the NCMHCE?

There is no universal passing percentage. NBCC establishes a cut score for each exam form; practice targets are study measures rather than official cutoffs.

How is the NCMHCE scored?

The current NCMHCE has 11 clinical case simulations with multiple-choice items. There are 100 scored questions, each worth one point, and one unscored case study. Your total scored points are compared to the cut score for your form.

What does the NCMHCE score report show?

The score report shows pass or fail, your total score compared with the cut score, and your performance across the NCMHCE work behavior domains so you can see which areas to strengthen before a retake.

Is the NCMHCE graded on a curve?

No. It is criterion-referenced: you pass by meeting the cut score for your form, not by outperforming other candidates.
