NCE exam prep

Short answer

Effective NCE exam prep takes 6–10 weeks at 6–10 hours per week and is question-led, not reading-led. Take a diagnostic set of practice questions, score yourself by CACREP area, then study only your two or three weakest areas. The NCE is 200 multiple-choice items (160 scored) in 3 hours 45 minutes.

An 8-week NCE prep schedule

Week 1 — diagnose. Take a timed practice set cold. Record accuracy per CACREP area. Do not study first; you need an honest baseline.
Weeks 2–3 — weakest two areas. Usually assessment and research for practitioners, theory for recent grads. Read a chapter, then immediately do 30 questions on it.
Weeks 4–5 — theory and ethics drilling. These carry the most items. Build a one-page cheat sheet of theorists and their core mechanism of change.
Week 6 — full timed run. 200 questions in one sitting to build stamina and pacing at ~67 seconds per item.
Week 7 — error review. Re-work every missed item and classify the miss: content gap, misread, or second-guess.
Week 8 — taper. Light review, cheat sheets, sleep. No new material in the last five days.

Question strategy that moves your score

Answer as a textbook counselor, not as yourself. The NCE rewards the ethically ideal, by-the-book response.
Safety and ethics first. When two answers are clinically defensible, the one addressing risk or informed consent usually wins.
Eliminate absolutes. Options with "always" or "never" are rarely correct.
Don't change answers without a reason. Change only when you can name what you misread.

How long should NCE exam prep take?

Most candidates need six to ten weeks of consistent prep, roughly 6–10 hours per week. If you are testing within a year of graduating, the shorter end is realistic; if you have been out of school several years, plan on ten weeks with heavier review of theory and assessment.

Is the NCE harder than the NCMHCE?

Most candidates find the NCE easier. The NCE tests knowledge recall and application across eight CACREP areas; the NCMHCE tests sequenced clinical decision-making inside case simulations. They require different prep methods, which is why studying for one does not fully prepare you for the other.

What score do you need to pass the NCE?

NBCC establishes a form-specific passing score using standard setting and equating. There are 160 scored items; no universal raw cutoff or passing percentage applies.
