The NCE’s eight CACREP curriculum areas are study categories, not its six scored work-behavior domains. Its current scored blueprint includes Professional Practice and Ethics; Intake, Assessment, and Diagnosis; Areas of Clinical Focus; Treatment Planning; Counseling Skills and Interventions; and Core Counseling Attributes. On the NCMHCE, Areas of Clinical Focus is represented through case diagnoses and scenarios, not separately weighted scored items.

These formats apply before July 1, 2027. NBCC has announced new specifications effective that date; check the outline for your test date. We did not locate verified national first-time or retake pass rates in the official materials reviewed. Practice scores are not official passing scores or a guarantee of an exam result.

An 8-week NCE study plan

Weeks 1–2

Counseling & Helping Relationships plus Professional Orientation & Ethics. Review concepts and explain each practice answer in your own words.

Weeks 3–4

Assessment & Testing plus Research & Program Evaluation. Work through unfamiliar measurement and statistics concepts with examples.

Weeks 5–6

Human Growth & Development, Social & Cultural Diversity, Career Development, Group Work. Heavy flashcard use — these are recall-dominant.

Weeks 7–8

Mix timed practice with targeted review. Review every miss, tag it to a content area, and re-drill the weakest two areas.

How long should I study for the NCE?

The eight-week schedule below is a suggested practice plan, not a verified preparation requirement. Adjust it to your baseline knowledge, available hours, and missed-topic patterns.

How many questions do you need to get right to pass the NCE?

The NCE has 200 items but only 160 are scored. NBCC sets a form-specific passing score. There is no universal raw cutoff or fixed passing percentage; practice scores are not official passing scores.

What is the NCE pass rate?

We did not locate verified national first-time or retake pass rates in the official NBCC/CCE materials reviewed. State and program statistics are not national rates.

Is the NCE the same as the NCMHCE?

No. The NCE uses independent multiple-choice questions; the NCMHCE uses narrative case studies followed by multiple-choice questions. Check your state board and certification pathway to determine which examination is accepted.

Do I need to memorize the DSM-5-TR for the NCE?

Not verbatim. You need core diagnostic criteria, differential distinctions (for example major depressive disorder vs persistent depressive disorder), duration thresholds, and which disorders appear in which chapter. Deep specifier-level memorization is not rewarded on the NCE.
