Short answer

The NCE is 200 multiple-choice items (160 scored) across eight NBCC content areas. Study in weight order — Counseling & Helping Relationships (~17%) and Assessment & Testing (~14%) first — using timed practice questions rather than re-reading. Most candidates need 6–10 weeks at 8–10 hours per week and should be scoring 75%+ on practice tests before sitting.

An 8-week NCE study plan

Weeks 1–2

Counseling & Helping Relationships plus Professional Orientation & Ethics — the two areas that carry the most items and the most easy points.

Weeks 3–4

Assessment & Testing plus Research & Program Evaluation. These are where most failing candidates lose the exam; do statistics problems by hand.

Weeks 5–6

Human Growth & Development, Social & Cultural Diversity, Career Development, Group Work. Heavy flashcard use — these are recall-dominant.

Weeks 7–8

Full-length timed practice tests only. Review every miss, tag it to a content area, and re-drill the weakest two areas.

What is the best way to study for the NCE?

Study by content area weight, not by textbook order. Counseling & Helping Relationships (~17%) and Assessment & Testing (~14%) are the two heaviest areas, so they should get the most hours. Alternate content review with timed practice questions from day one — recall practice, not re-reading, is what moves NCE scores.

How long should I study for the NCE?

Most candidates need 6 to 10 weeks at 8 to 10 hours per week. If you graduated within the last year, 6 weeks is realistic. If you have been out of a CACREP program for several years, plan on 10 to 12 weeks with heavier review of research, statistics, and career development.

How many questions do you need to get right to pass the NCE?

The NCE has 200 items but only 160 are scored. The passing cut score is set by NBCC for each form and typically falls between 90 and 110 correct scored items. NBCC does not publish a fixed percentage, so aim for 75% or better on practice tests to build margin.

What is the NCE pass rate?

First-time pass rates for candidates from CACREP-accredited programs generally run near 80 to 85%. Retake pass rates are lower. Failing candidates most often lose points in Assessment & Testing and Research & Program Evaluation, the two most technical areas.

Is the NCE the same as the NCMHCE?

No. The NCE is 200 multiple-choice items testing knowledge recall and is used mainly for the NCC credential. The NCMHCE is a four-hour exam of clinical case simulations used by most states for LMHC / LPC licensure. Studying for one does not prepare you for the other.

Do I need to memorize the DSM-5-TR for the NCE?

Not verbatim. You need core diagnostic criteria, differential distinctions (for example major depressive disorder vs persistent depressive disorder), duration thresholds, and which disorders appear in which chapter. Deep specifier-level memorization is not rewarded on the NCE.
