NCE strategy

How to pass the NCE on your first try

Last updated September 29, 2026 · Published by Counseling Exam Assist

Short answer

Take a baseline practice test, study your two weakest CACREP areas first, then do timed 50-question sets each week. Aim for steady practice scores around 70% or higher before test day, and pace yourself at about 67 seconds per question.

Step 1: Know the format

The NCE has 200 multiple-choice items (160 scored) in 3 hours 45 minutes, covering the eight CACREP content areas. The cut score is set per form — see NCE passing score.

Step 2: Take a baseline test

Start with the free 25-question NCE practice exam. Write down which areas you missed most.

Step 3: Follow an 8-week plan

WeekFocus
1Baseline test; counseling theories
2Human growth and development
3Assessment and testing
4Research and program evaluation
5Ethics and diversity
6Career and group counseling
7Two timed full-length practice runs; review every miss
8Weak-area review with NCE flashcards; light final week

Step 4: Practice pacing

  • Budget about 67 seconds per question; flag and move on after 90 seconds.
  • On ethics items, pick the answer that protects client welfare and follows the ACA Code.
  • On "first" or "best" questions, choose assessment and safety before intervention.

Step 5: Plan logistics

Check NCE exam dates and your state's requirements on the LPC exam page. If you'll also take the clinical exam, compare them in NCMHCE vs NCE.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I study for the NCE?

Most candidates study 6–10 weeks at 8–12 hours per week. Recent graduates of CACREP programs often need less; candidates testing years after graduation often need more.

What is the best way to study for the NCE?

Practice questions beat re-reading. Take a baseline practice test, focus on your two weakest content areas, and keep doing timed question sets until you score comfortably above the passing range.

How many questions are on the NCE?

200 multiple-choice questions, 160 of which are scored and 40 unscored pretest items. You have 3 hours and 45 minutes.

Is the NCE hard to pass?

Most first-time takers from CACREP programs pass. The exam is broad rather than tricky, so steady practice across all eight areas is the main factor.
