NCC vs state license

The NCC is national and voluntary. Your state license is what lets you practice. Many states accept the same exams; see the LPC exam and LMHC exam guides for which exam your state uses.

Frequently asked questions

What is NCC certification?

The National Certified Counselor (NCC) is a voluntary national credential from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). It shows you meet national standards for education, supervised experience, and exam performance.

What exam do I need for the NCC?

You must pass the NCE or the NCMHCE. Many students in CACREP programs can take the NCE before graduating through NBCC's student pathway.

Is the NCC the same as a counseling license?

No. Your state board issues your license (LPC, LMHC, LCPC and so on). The NCC is a national certification. Some states use the same exams, so the work often overlaps.

How long does the NCC last?

The NCC renews on a five-year cycle with continuing education and an annual fee. Check NBCC for current CE hours and fees.
