Timing and scoring in 2027

The new exam allows 3 hours 45 minutes, with an optional 15-minute break at the halfway point. Scores use a scale from 100 to 500, with a passing score of 360. A scaled score is not a raw percentage; do not convert 360 into a percentage-correct target.

What three answer choices means for strategy

The new exam has three answer choices per question. Keep evaluating the fit of every remaining option: fewer choices do not remove the need to distinguish an appropriate action from the best action for the situation. Practice explaining why the alternatives do not answer the question.

Legal compliance, indirect care, and AI ethics

Legal & Ethical Compliance accounts for 20% of the new outline; Indirect Client Care accounts for 12%. The new content includes ethical and legal use of AI in counseling practice.

As a study strategy, review how to evaluate confidentiality, informed consent, professional responsibility, and the limitations of technology. Distinguish coordination and other indirect work from direct counseling interventions; use NBCC’s outline to set the boundaries of your review.

Prepare according to your test date

Before July 2027, organize preparation around the current domain weights. From July 1, 2027 onward, use the new outline and practice the three-choice format; confirm the latest NBCC guidance if your appointment changes.
